Nicole Liptak: Engineering Innovation, One Patent at a Time

Nicole Liptak, Aptiv's senior advanced development product engineer, embodies the spirit of innovation. As a dedicated engineer and prolific inventor, she balances her work on cutting-edge tech with being a role model for her daughters. Her remarkable career, punctuated by numerous patents, has earned her a place in Aptiv's Innovation Hall of Fame.

Nicole's philosophy that a single specialty doesn't define one's career has fueled her diverse achievements. In this Q&A, she shares insights into the opportunities at Aptiv that have empowered her success and fostered her multifaceted approach to engineering.

Can you tell us about your current role at Aptiv?

I'm based at the Technical Center in Warren, Ohio, where I focus on designing and developing next-generation high-speed data connection systems. These systems are crucial for providing innovative solutions to quickly move and share large amounts of data, meeting increasing consumer demands for safety and connectivity during vehicle operation.

You've been with Aptiv since you first started as an intern. Could you share your two-decade journey with us?

I began in Reliability Engineering and was selected for advanced Six Sigma statistical training just three months after joining. This was challenging as a recent graduate in a class of experienced male engineers. With support from my supervisor, I became Aptiv's first certified Six Sigma Black Belt.

This early recognition boosted my confidence and passion for success. I then moved to Product Engineering, where I designed and developed products from scratch based on customer requirements. During this time, I was granted my first patent, which was incredibly fulfilling.

What sets Aptiv apart, in your opinion?

Aptiv's commitment to recognizing and rewarding female success is distinctive. Receiving my first patent inspired me to set a new goal: becoming the first woman from North America inducted into the Innovation Hall of Fame for achieving 10 patents. As a mother of two girls, I wanted to show that women can reach the same heights as men in this field. In 2019, I achieved this goal, which remains my proudest career accomplishment.

I've had the privilege of working with talented individuals worldwide and witnessing Aptiv's leadership in advancing automotive technologies. The industry's fast-paced nature keeps it exciting and dynamic.

Why do you believe Aptiv is the right company for women engineers?

Aptiv emphasizes work-life harmony, allowing me to be present for my family while building a rewarding career. My journey has expanded my capabilities beyond my college degree, delving into statistics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. I've applied these skills to diverse technical products, devising innovative design solutions.

Aptiv values diversity, supports professional growth, and promotes a healthy work-life balance, making it an ideal place for women engineers to thrive and excel.
